Schools & Colleges

Raleigh is home to several of the country's finest colleges and universities. A handsome byproduct of this collection of institutions is the plethora of educational and cultural opportunities available to all of the City's residents.

North Carolina State University

Known worldwide for its engineering and agricultural programs, North Carolina State University spans thousands of acres on the western edge of the City. Undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs bring the brightest minds to this region. Plus, NCSU offers some of the finest crafts programs for aspiring artists interesting in working with gems, wood, clay, fabric or paint.

Peace College

Offering both baccalaureate and associate degrees for women, Peace College has a long history as a place for learning and healing. Established as a Presbyterian school for girls in 1857 by William Peace, the eight-acre campus was used as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War, as the Freedmen's Bureau where freed blacks came for food and health services, and finally as the woman's college it is today.

Meredith College

One of the largest independent private women's colleges in the United States, Meredith College provides liberal arts education to a diverse population of women, plus coeducational graduate and continuing education programs. Recognized by U.S. World Report as one of the best colleges in the South in 2005, Meredith offers to the public a wide variety of cultural activities on its manicured 225-acre campus on Hillsborough Street.

St. Mary's School

Founded in 1842, St. Mary's School is Raleigh's oldest private boarding and day school for high school-age girls. This scenic 160-acre campus is located at 900 Hillsborough Street, and the oldest of the buildings were constructed using stone originally quarried for the State Capitol.
